How to Achieve Smart Goals in the New Year

How to Achieve Smart Goals in 2018 + Free Worksheet

Ever try using a GPS without a destination? Of course not! Your goals are the destination that make it possible to create a roadmap for your life. So today, we’re sharing the step by step to creating, defining, and organizing your goals.
.
I’ve spent many of my formative years excitedly setting goals, only to allow my list of “goals” to collect dust in a drawer. I loved setting goals, but I hadn’t mastered ACHIEVING said goals. That was until I began avidly reading about habit formation, mindset shifts, and high performance. I learned that there are time tested approaches to defining and organizing your goals in a way that improves your ability to achieve them with clarity.
.
Suddenly decluttering your home, schedule, and to do list will become light years easier because your goals will be the north star that guides you. Let’s begin:

BRAINSTORM & DON’T HOLD BACK

.

Step 2. Goal Braindump (worksheet, p. 1): Capture every goal that comes to mind without judgement or assessment. Write down everything and anything that you wish to achieve.
.
Step 3. Values (worksheet, p. 1): Write down your top 10 values from most important to least important. This could include anything from ‘Family’ to ‘Freedom.’ This list will be used to assess which goals support your top values.
.

DEFINE YOUR GOALS

.
Step 4. Simplify (worksheet, p. 1): Review your ‘goal braindump’ list and select your top 3 priority goals based on which ones are closely tied to your values. These are your current goals that will receive all of your energy in the coming weeks & months. The other goals can wait until these 3 have been accomplished or are well on their way. Trust us, simplicity and focus are key to your success!
.
Step 5. Apply the S.M.A.R.T. model to each priority goal (worksheet, p. 1): This model for crafting goals works brilliantly! Go through each of the items in the S.M.A.R.T. checklist and confirm that each goal fulfills the requirements: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
.

ORGANIZE YOUR GOALS

.

Step 6. Create Milestones (worksheet, p. 2-4): Break down each goal into at least 3 key milestones, and apply a specific date. By breaking up your goal into smaller chunks, you’ll be able to celebrate the little wins along the way.
.
Step 7. Identify Action items (worksheet, p. 2-4): Write down a detailed list of concrete action steps to hit each milestone. Make sure to keep this document updated as you mark off ‘action steps’ from your list!
.
Step 6. Set Appointments: Schedule regular appointments to work towards your goal and mark off ‘action steps’ from your list. This will make sure you’re moving closer to your goal every week!
.

TAKE ACTION!
