CREATIVE GIVING: CLUTTER-FREE HOLIDAY GIFTS

Written by Shira Gill of Shira Gill Home

I am always searching for creative gifts that don’t cost a lot of money or take up much space. Most people have more than enough stuff, but not nearly enough time or energy to do what they love. I don’t know about you, but I would gladly pass on a new sweater in exchange for a clean house or some relaxing time to myself. Here are some unconventional gift ideas to show you care and help your loved ones stay clutter-free. A total win-win in my book.

THE GIFT OF TIME

Between work, family, and social obligations most people are dying for a break.
Why not buy someone a few hours of organizing, housecleaning, or a handyman to fix any nagging house problems? Short on cash? Get down and dirty and offer the service yourself! image via hubsch-interior

DINNER + A MOVIE
Get your apron on and treat someone to a homemade meal and a movie. What could be better than coming home after a long day to find a delicious dinner, still warm from the oven, followed by a favorite flick? A basket stocked with popcorn and old school candies are sure to be a hit. For extra credit include disposable plates and utensils or stick around and do the dishes. image via A Pretty Cool Life

BREAKFAST IN BED
Pick up some yummy pastries, pour coffee and fresh squeezed juice, and cook up a tasty breakfast for the one you love. Bonus points if you let them sleep in. I sure hope my husband is reading this. image via Etsy

SWEET TREATS

Fill a glass jar with homemade sweets and tie with twine or a pretty cloth ribbon.  Candied orange peels, chocolates, caramels, cookies, brownies or bars all look and taste great. You can also opt for hot chocolate with marshmallows and a peppermint stick. Yum! image via unknown

ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING!

Do you know someone with young kids who could use a break? So many couples with young kids don’t live close to their family, and struggle to find or afford regular babysitters. Offer a certificate for a well-deserved date night out and you will be a true hero. Order some take-out and entertain the little ones with some art supplies and a couple of games. The kids will love being spoiled with attention and their parents will be so grateful to get some quality time out together. image via mother mag

SPA DATE

Who doesn’t like a little pampering from time to time? Offer a gift card for a massage or a pedicure or better yet, round up your group of family or friends and host a spa date at your local salon. Ask if you can provide a light lunch, refreshments and some treats to kick it up a notch. image via Design Milk

TRIBUTE BOOK

What could be better than being showered with love and praise by everyone you know? All you need is a large blank scrapbook or a portfolio book with clear pages. Solicit colleagues, friends and family for contributions – photos, old letters, cherished memories, and funny anecdotes to fill the pages. I did this for my father on the year of his 70th birthday and I know he treasured the thoughtfulness of this gift more than any of material items that he received. image via pleasenotepaper

PAY IT FORWARD

The ultimate clutter-free gift! Make a contribution to a favorite charity, plant a tree, or sponsor a child in the name of your friend or loved one. It feels great to make a positive impact on the world and it’s such a kind and unique way to honor someone you love. image via HGTV
