Balled up old sheets and unraveling towels are, well…sad. Luckily, it’s fairly quick and easy to set up a stylish and organized linen closet.
Step 1: PREP
Start by removing everything from the shelves. You heard me. Everything. I generally place an old sheet on the floor so it’s easy to lay everything out in preparation for editing and sorting. Give your shelves a wipe down and line them with pretty adhesive shelf liners for a little added polish. I like this striped number from The Container Store.
Step 2: EDIT
Review your sheets and towels and donate the duds to your local animal shelter. Incomplete sheet sets, and anything with holes, rips or stains should go.
Step 3: STOCK UP
It’s worth it to invest in a few sets of crisp high quality sheets and towels. I recommend two sets per bed in high thread count cotton and neutral colors. For towels, I suggest two per person, plus a set of beach towels. Make sure to also stock your home with one full set of guest towels and bed linens.
Step 4: SET UP & STYLE
Now, for the fun part! Fold your sheets and towels into piles. A guide to folding those pesky fitted sheets can be found here. Gather up the guest sheets and towels and store them all together in a labeled bin or basket. You can also stock the basket with some toiletries and other guest amenities to make hosting a breeze.
Place the remaining sheets and towels on your shelves organized by room or bed size – e.g., kid’s room, master bedroom, guest room etc. Separate with acrylic shelf dividers so stacks don’t topple over and affix some pretty labels so everyone in your household can easily find the right sheets for the right bed. Voila!
