Lost your Keys? – 5 Organizing Tips for never losing them again
I used to misplace my car keys all the time. And of course, I never lost my car keys on a quiet Saturday afternoon when I was leaving for a lunch-date early. NOoooOpe!
My keys would always go mysteriously missing on the biggest, most important day of the week. It would be the morning of a big college exam, or before a work meeting across town.
On my way out the door, I would suddenly realize my car keys weren’t in my purse, and the frenzied tornado would begin. For 10 “pillow throwing, stress inducing, dog panting” minutes I would tear through my apartment looking for my keys. 10 minutes is all it would take for me to destroy my living room, bedroom and kitchen in a vicious hunt.
When an item is small, portable and travels around with us to multiple locations, it’s quite easy to set it down somewhere when you’re distracted.
So how do we change this? The key is to create a few systems that guarantee that you know EXACTLY where your keys are at all times. And over time, this saves a TON of wasted minutes, energy and sanity.
Here are 5 tactics to never losing your keys again.
1. DESIGNATE A LANDING SPOT AT HOME
Always place your keys on a hook or in a tray in a “high-traffic” area of the house, so that you always know where they are and they’re super accessible. I may be “captain obvious” on this one, but you’d be surprised on how many people don’t do this.
If you make a habit of placing the keys in the same spot every single time, you’ll go on auto-pilot when you grab them on your way out of the house. Any time you can go on “auto-pilot” in your routine, means you’re saving valuable mental space for the important stuff. product via Corgi Leather
2. USE A BIG VIBRANT KEYCHAIN
If your keys take up more space and are vibrantly colored, you’ll see them more easily. It’s as simply as that! Whether they’re getting lost in a sea of stuff at home, or the bottom of your purse, this may be the trick for you! product via Sirogane Leather Works
3. ADD AN ELECTRONIC TRACKER TO YOUR KEYCHAIN
An electronic tracking device is an effective way to track down your keys in a pinch. Typically, these trackers clip to your keychain, and with a simple click of a remote button, your keys will chirp loudly like an alarm clock. However, technology is making this process even MORE convenient.
The “Tile” is a small square device that clips to your keychain and syncs to your iPhone. This allows you to track where your keys, wallet or other small items are even if they’re in a completely different location. Pretty cool!! product via Amazon
4. HOOK THE KEYCHAIN TO THE TOP OF YOUR PURSE OR BELT LOOP
Fishing your keys out from the bottom of your purse is both time consuming and inconvenient. Try adding a hook or clasp to the end of your keychain, and keep them secured in an easy to reach location. 5. WEAR YOUR KEYS LIKE A NECKLACE
Lanyards are a brilliant solution if you tend to not use a purse or are constantly carrying a million things at once. Hanging your keys right around your neck is a sure-fire way of not misplacing them.
I especially love this lanyard I found on Etsy. It’s stylish AND so convenient. The keychain portion detaches from the necklace, so you can grab your keys right off your neck without taking your lanyard off. So convenient! product via By Mathilda C
Bonus: GET A KEYCHAIN YOU LOVE
If you love something and appreciate it daily, you’re more likely to be conscientious of how you treat it. If your keys are an eye sore, try jazzing them up with a keychain that tickles you pink! I personally have my eye on this beautiful keychain from Anthropologie. It may be worth the splurge. Plus, the wrist hook and clasp are right in line with these tactics.
